Thomas Joseph Mertens

Thomas Joseph (Tommy Joe) Mertens, 71, of Florissant, Mo., passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 18, 2018. He was born August 1, 1947 in Columbus, Wis., to the late John Mertens and the late Louise (Wichmann) Mertens. He was a devoted and loving son, husband, brother, uncle, and friend. He was loved and will be dearly missed by many. Tom was a second lieutenant in the Army Reserves, where he commanded an engineering company of reservists. He taught classes in the industrial technology department of Hazelwood Central High School for many years, where he was a highly valued member of the faculty. He obtained his B.S. at Lincoln University of MO and an M.S. in Education from Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg. He enjoyed camping, woodworking, electronics, and most of all, people. He had a wonderful sense of humor and treasured his nieces and nephews. Tom is survived by his loving and dedicated wife Etta, who was by his side until his death. He also leaves behind brothers, Henry and wife Ruth Ann, John and wife Pat, Carl and partner Kenda, and Chuck and wife Marlys; cousin Marilyn Pogue; and seven nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary. A memorial service will be held at Fulton United Church of Christ on Saturday, November 24 at 1:00 p.m.
