Dr. Richard Edward Mattingly, 80, of Fulton, Mo., passed away at The Bluffs in Columbia on Tuesday, April 3, 2018. Born in Wichita, Kansas on New Year's Day of 1938, he was the son of Eugene Harold Mattingly and Ruth McGuire Mattingly. Richard attended East High School in Wichita, Kansas, graduating in 1956. He obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy and English from University of Kansas and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from University of Texas. Richard joined Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. in 1966 and was there until his retirement in 2000. Although retired, his support for the college continued. He served as a Philosophy Professor from 1966 until 2000; Dean of Faculty from 1977 until 1995; and as Vice President of the College from 1978 until 1995. He held memberships in Sigma Chi Social Fraternity, American Philosophical Association, American Association of University Professors, Friends of Callaway County Public Library, Mid-Missouri Associated Colleges and Universities, Missouri Conference of Academic Deans, and Prairie Garden Trust. Richard was a gifted educator who inspired lively discussions and critical thinking. Working with colleagues on the faculty and in the administration, students, staff and trustees made his years at Westminster rewarding. He had a quick, dry sense of humor and will be remembered both personally and professionally as being very kind, even-tempered and patient. His love of nature photography and hiking were evident in the many slides taken in his favorite National Parks, Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons and Denali. Later in life he found it enjoyable and challenging to work on family genealogy. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eugene Harold Mattingly Jr.; and grandparents, Edward E. and Emma McGuire and Paul and Anna Mattingly. Surviving family includes his wife Susan Shotliff Mattingly of 54 years; son, Eric Scott Mattingly of Columbia, Mo.; sister, Linda Mattingly Schumaker and husband Robert of Edmond, Okla.; nephews, R. David Schumaker, M.D. and wife Amy of Knoxville, Tenn., and Scott A. Schumaker and wife Jennifer of Oklahoma City, Okla.; nieces, Terry Ruth Shupe and husband Michael of Olympia, Wash., and Kimberly Lynn House and husband Marty of McAlester, Okla; and seven grand-nephews and nieces. A Memorial Service officiated by Dr. Bill Young, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury, located on the Westminster College Campus. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Richard's name can be made to Westminster College or the Vasculitis Foundation. Condolences may be left for the family at www.maupinfuneralhome.com.
