He was born May 18, 1931 in Auxvasse, the son of the late Earl Skeleton Stephens and the late Myrtle Mae (Cuno) Stephens. Gene was married to Mary Joe (Brown) Stephens on April 12, 1961. He spoke of picking up the tenor banjo at the age of 10 and playing for square dancers on Saturday nights in Shamrock. Gene was a sportsman with a love for hunting and fishing. He took over as Scoutmaster of Fulton Troop 53 and continued to serve Boy Scouts of America when he helped start Explorer Post 353. A worthy competitor that loved working with mules, miniature horses and fox hounds. Competing in dog shows, field trials and winning several awards with his foxhounds. In 1999 Gene was made a member of the Grand Royal American Foxhound Club's Hall of Fame. His memory will be treasured by his wife of 55 years, Mary; son, Dennis E. Stephens (Jo Ann) of St. Charles; granddaughter, Patricia Hope Stephens of Norfolk, Va.; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, Gene was preceded in death by three brothers, Bud, Wilford and Francis Stephens; and two sisters, Kathryn Klick and Ethel Christopher.
