Don Carter Sr.

Don Carter Sr., age 81, of Fulton, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2011, at his daughter's home, with his family at his side. Don was born February 27, 1930 in Roscoe, Ill., to James Thurman and Bonnie Opal Smith Carter. On December 21, 1952, he married Eleanor Jeanette Huffman in Capron, Ill., and she preceded him in death on February 26, 1975. He was a dairy and crop farmer for many years and then started his own taxi business in Fulton, which he operated for at least 20 years. He was a member of the National Dairy Association and National Farmer's Organization. Survivors include two sons, Terry A. (Helga) Carter of Fulton, and Don (Angie) Carter Jr. of Holts Summit; three daughters, Pam N. (George) Hughes of Randolph, Iowa, Karen S. (Bob) Higgins of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Rita J. (Kenneth) Wells of Columbia; three brothers, Tom (Betty) Carter of Caledonia, Ill., John Carter of Capron, Ill., and Doyle Carter of Machesney Park, Ill.; two sisters, Carolyn Taft of Capron, Ill. and Bonnie (Gordon) Keast of Belevidere, Ill.; 17 grandchildren, 12 great- grandchildrenp; and two step-daughters, Angie and Glenda Jenkins. He was also preceded in death by a second wife, Margaret Jenkins Carter; a daughter, Julie Carter Rugg and a son, Brian K. Carter. A gathering of family and friends will celebrate Don's life from 11:00 a.m - 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 27 2011, at Southside Baptist Church in Fulton.
