High school softball: Elsberry 10, North Callaway 3

ELSBERRY - The Ladybirds dropped to 5-6 overall and 3-2 in the Eastern Missouri Conference after Thursday night's loss to the Lady Indians.

Elsberry (5-5, 2-3) built a 10-0 lead behind three runs in the bottom of the first inning, four runs in the second and three runs in the fourth. North Callaway put up all three of its runs in the top of the fifth.

Junior third baseman Mikayla Pennell went 2-for-4 with a solo home run as the Ladybirds totalled eight hits. Senior shortstop Ellie Eckert finished 2-for-4 with a triple and a stolen base, while junior pitcher Hayley Kimbley was 1-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored.

Kimbley (4-4) went the distance in taking the loss, surrendering 10 runs - six earned - on 12 hits. She struck out five and issued four walks.

North Callaway (0-6-1) played to a 6-6 tie in the junior varsity game.

The Ladybirds face host Cairo at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the first round of the Cairo Tournament.
