High school softball: North Callaway takes sixth at Putnam County Tournament

UNIONVILLE - Junior third baseman Mikayla Pennell had three hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs in the North Callaway Ladybirds' 10-6 loss to Chillicothe in the fifth-place game of the Putnam County Tournament on Saturday.

Pennell went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in the first inning and scored two runs as North Callaway (4-5) collected 11 hits. Senior shortstop Ellie Eckert finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and scored a run, while freshman right fielder Jalyn Leible was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Freshman pitcher Reagan Clayton (0-1) took the loss for the Ladybirds, allowing 10 runs - seven earned - on 10 hits and one walk in five innings.

In pool play Saturday, North Callaway opened with a 10-8 loss to host Putnam County. The Ladybirds rebounded for an 11-3 victory against South Harrison, but were then edged by Highland 4-3.

North Callaway returns to Eastern Missouri Conference play with a trip to Clopton at 5 p.m. today.
