Girls' basketball: Kirksville 58, Fulton 42

KIRKSVILLE - The Lady Hornets were outscored 17-7 in the second quarter and trailed 30-18 at the break in bowing to the Lady Tigers in North Central Missouri Conference play Friday night.

Kirksville edged Fulton 18-17 in the third quarter to maintain a 48-35 advantage and then outscored the Lady Hornets 10-7 in the fourth quarter to wrap up the victory. The Lady Tigers also avenged a 39-33 loss at Fulton on Dec. 15.

Senior guard Shawnie Hempfield delivered a career-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Fulton (2-17, 1-7 NCMC) on Friday night. Freshman guard Kayanna Gaines provided 10 points and junior forward Haden Trowbridge accounted for six points and 12 rebounds.

"I feel like a broken record, but we can't seem to play four quarters - we have that one quarter where the wheels fall off," Fulton head coach TJ Quick said. "Having said that, the girls never stop.

"This team shows a lot of fight and we're going to get the results eventually."

Elyse Johnson topped Kirksville with 17 points.

The Lady Hornets (1-9) fell in the junior varsity game 51-39. Freshman guard Olivia Gowin tallied 16 points and four rebounds, while freshman forward Sydney Hedgpath produced eight points and 10 rebounds.

Fulton hosts a makeup NCMC game against Marshall at 6 p.m. Monday at Roger D. Davis Gymnasium. The Lady Hornets lost at Marshall 59-18 on Dec. 7.
