Track and field: Distler, Wildcats collect team title at California meet

Daelyn Schmauch, Garrett guide Ladybirds to second-place finish

CALIFORNIA - New Bloomfield freshman Caleb Distler triumphed in both the 800 and 3,200 meters to help spark the Wildcats to the team title at California High School's Guy Rush Memorial on Tuesday night.

Senior Tanner Pezold and juniors Paden Lewis, Khobi Kellerman and Zeb Meffert each won events to guide North Callaway to a fifth-place team finish.

In the girls' division, sophomore Daelyn Schmauch was victorious in the 1,600 and senior Erica Garrett prevailed in the javelin as North Callaway came in second overall. New Bloomfield finished in sixth place.

Distler won the 800 and 1,600 with respective times of 2 minutes, 8.96 seconds and 11:15.64 as the New Bloomfield boys secured the team championship with 150 points. Senior Clay Walker took first in the 200 in :23.43 and was second in the 100 (:11.65), while senior Payton Culwell triumphed in the 400 in :51.82.

The Wildcats also posted victories in three of the four relay races. Culwell, Walker and fellow seniors Jak Kitchens and Cole Hazelhorst won the 800 relay in 1:33.27, while Culwell, Kitchens, Walker and senior Kyle Emerson prevailed in the 1,600 relay in 3:33.62.

The 3,200 relay of Emerson, Culwell, Distler and junior Bailey Crane triumphed in 8:38.84. The quartet of Kitchens, Hazelhorst, senior Austin Carrier and junior Aliczander Nikonowicz finished third in the 400 relay (:47.11).

Sophomore Easton Ambler came in second in both the 110 hurdles (:18.19) and 300 hurdles (:44.90) for New Bloomfield. Carrier took second in the 800 (2:13.62) and junior Robert Morningstar was second in the 1,600 (5:01.99).

Kitchens finished third in the 200 (:24.11), freshman Adam Deppe placed third in the 110 hurdles (:18.64), and Nikonowicz came in third in the 300 hurdles (:46.35). Emerson took fourth in the pole vault (8 feet, 6 inches), while freshman Kaleb Brandt was fourth in the shot put (43-5).

Pezold won the javelin by breaking his own school record at 154-10 as the North Callaway boys accumulated 77 points. Lewis was victorious in the shot at 51-5 1/2, Kellerman prevailed in the 1,600 in 4:56.24, and Meffert won the pole vault at 12-0.

Sophomore Will Jeffries and junior Mark Hollenberg came in third (117-8) and fourth (116-6), respectively, in the discus for the Thunderbirds. Senior Skyler Barker finished fourth in the 110 hurdles (:18.77) and junior Ean Rohrbach placed fourth in the 1,600 (5:19.46).

Barker teamed with juniors Keaton Rice and Garrett Dodge, and sophomore Cody Lee to take fourth in the 800 relay (1:44.85). Kellerman and Rohrbach joined with freshmen Grant Eichman and Noah Scrogum to finish fourth in the 3,200 relay (9:33.60).

Schmauch won the 1,600 in 5:54.16 and Garrett triumphed in the javelin at 99-6 as the North Callaway girls compiled 131 points. Daelyn Schmauch combined with her sister, senior Reyna Schmauch, and sophomore Breanna Douglas and freshman Kaleigh Moore to take first in the 3,200 relay in 11:13.05.

Moore was second in the 800 (2:36.71) and third in the 400 (1:07.40), while Reyna Schmauch came in second in the 1,600 (6:02.37). Senior Abrielle Berry placed second in the shot (35-7 1/2).

Freshman Makenna Allen finished third in both the 100 hurdles (:18.39) and 300 hurdles (:52.97), and fourth in the 200 (:29.41) for the Ladybirds. Senior Kallie Jo Lehenbauer took third in both the 200 (:29.38) and long jump (15-6 1/4).

Daelyn and Reyna Schmauch, and Moore teamed with freshman Julisa Moreno to finish third in the 1,600 relay (4:37.16). Douglas placed fourth in the 3,200 (15:25.87), junior Christa Gilman was fourth in the triple jump (30-11), and freshman Olivia Isaacks came in fourth in the high jump (4-8).

Freshman Aislin Jennings finished second in the 400 (1:06.89) and freshman Makenna Branch took second in the high jump (4-8) as the New Bloomfield girls logged 54 points. Junior Samantha Haas was third in the triple jump (32-7 1/2) and fourth in the long jump (14-5 3/4).

Branch teamed with senior Mckenna Rackers and juniors Parker Pitzen and Mackenzie Garrett to come in second in the 1,600 relay (4:29.63). Garrett, Branch, senior Kassi O'Dowd and sophomore Abbie Schattgen were second in the 3,200 relay (11:15.69).

Garrett, Pitzen, Haas and Rackers took fourth in the 800 relay (1:56.63).

Versailles captured the girls' team championship with 142 points.

New Bloomfield competes at the South Callaway Relays at 4 p.m. Friday. North Callaway travels to the Eastern Missouri Conference championships at Montgomery County at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
