Track and field: Sandonis, Fulton girls finish fifth at Osage

OSAGE BEACH - Junior Maitane Sandonis prevailed in the 300 hurdles and came in second in the 100 hurdles to help direct the Lady Hornets to a fifth-place team finish at the Osage Invitational on Tuesday night.

In the boys' division, seniors Gabe Luebbert and Mason Gaines were victorious in the 800 and 3,200, respectively, as Fulton tied with Hallsville for seventh place overall.

Sandonis triumphed in the 300 hurdles with a time of 50 seconds and took second in the 100 hurdles in :17.05 as the Fulton girls logged 61 points. Senior Shawnie Hempfield finished second in both the 100 (:13.23) and triple jump (34 feet, 2 1/2 inches), while placing fourth in the 200 (:28.08).

Sophomore Maddie Henley also came in third in the 300 hurdles (:52.08) for the Lady Hornets and freshman Kayanna Gaines was third in the 3,200 (13:17.09).

Luebbert won the 800 in 2:03.36 and Mason Gaines prevailed in the 3,200 in 10:16.78 as the Fulton boys compiled 52.5 points. Luebbert also came in second (4:40.01) in the 1,600, while Gaines took fourth (4:46.77).

Eldon and St. James captured the girls' and boys' team championships, respectively, with 129.5 and 125 points.

Fulton competes at the Bruce Finlayson Invitational in Carrollton at 3:15 p.m. today.

Fulton has also qualified in five events - the girls' 100-meter dash and 400 and sprint medley relays, and the boys' 3,200-meter run and distance medley relay - for the Kansas Relays on Friday and Saturday.
