Track and field: Culwell, New Bloomfield boys finish third at Linn

LINN - Senior Payton Culwell won the boys' 400 meters and javelin to guide the Wildcats to a third-place team finish at the 23rd-annual Linn Invitational on Thursday night.

In the girls' division, junior Samantha Haas was victorious in the triple jump as New Bloomfield placed eighth as a team.

Culwell triumphed in the 400 in 53.25 seconds and prevailed in the javelin with a throw of 135 feet, 2 inches as the New Bloomfield boys compiled 93 points. Culwell also joined with fellow seniors Jak Kitchens, Clay Walker and Kyle Emerson to win the 1,600 relay in 3:42.26.

Walker was victorious in the 200 in :23.41 and came in third in both the 100 (:11.64) and 400 (:54.26). Freshman Caleb Distler took fourth in the 3,200 (11:15.91).

The Wildcats' 400 relay of Aliczander Nikonowicz, senior Cole Hazelhorst, Kitchens and senior Austin Carrier finished third (:50.09). The quartet of sophomore Chris Stone, junior Robert Morningstar, Distler and Emerson also came in third in the 3,200 relay (9:12.46).

Haas triumphed in the triple jump at 32-1/2 as the New Bloomfield girls totalled 38 points. Haas teamed with juniors Mackenzie Garrett and Parker Pitzen, and senior Mckenna Rackers to place fourth in the 800 relay (2:03.03).

The Lady Wildcats' 3,200 relay of Garrett, senior Kassi O'Dowd, sophomore Abbie Schattgen and freshman Makenna Branch finished third (11:54.76).

Versailles wrapped up the girls' team championship with 126.5 points and St. James captured the boys' team title with 124.

New Bloomfield travels to Centralia at 4 p.m. Thursday.
