Girls' Basketball: South Callaway 67, North Callaway 39

MOKANE, Mo. - Junior guard Adrian Mann helped the No. 5 seed South Callaway Lady Bulldogs gain some redemption, knocking down a career-high 33 points in a first-round romp over the No. 4 North Callaway Ladybirds at the South Callaway Tournament on Monday night.

South Callaway (9-4) - avenging a 43-42 loss at North Callaway on Jan. 2 - now moves on to a semifinal matchup against top-seeded Hermann at 6 tonight in the high school. The Lady Bearcats advanced by dismantling No. 8 seed Owensville 71-41 in first-round play Monday night.

The Lady Bulldogs were down by eight points to the Ladybirds early in the second quarter, but Mann buried one of her four 3-pointers with 2 seconds left to send South Callaway into the break with a 25-23 edge. The Lady Bulldogs - winners of three straight - then turned the game into a runaway by outscoring North Callaway 42-16 in the second half.

Mann finished 12-of-15 from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, and made all five of her free throws to spark three players in double figures for South Callaway. Senior guard Nicole Horstman - who also connected on four 3-pointers - supplied 16 points and junior guard Ashley Potter produced 10.

"This was a huge win for us after being down and losing at North Callaway," Lady Bulldogs head coach Darren Humphrey said. "We came out and probably played our best ball of the year so far.

"Defensively, I don't think we probably could have played any better as far as rebounding over those last three quarters."

Junior forward Allie Schlueter, with 12 points, was the only player to make it into double figures for the Ladybirds (8-2), who shot a dreadful 25 percent (16-of-63) from the field as their six-game winning streak was stopped. Junior guard Kyla Bertschinger and senior forward Sam Schaefer contributed nine points apiece, while Schaefer collected a team-high 14 rebounds.

"It was one of those nights where we couldn't hit and South Callaway couldn't miss," North Callaway head coach Morgan Beamer said. "You have to give South Callaway credit - they had a great night shooting."

The Ladybirds will face Owensville in the consolation semifinals at 6 tonight in the middle school.
