College: Blue Jays football team bows to Millsaps in home opener

The Westminster College Blue Jays football team generated just 139 yards of total offense in dropping its home opener to the Millsaps (Miss.) Majors 35-10 on Saturday.

Westminster (0-2) tallied the game's first points on junior kicker Brad Hammel's 36-yard field goal with 6 minutes, 21 seconds to go in the first quarter.

Millsaps (2-0) came up with a safety with 3:30 left in the quarter to make it 3-2. The Majors then took the lead for good on the first of four touchdown passes by Amryn Jeffrey, this one covering 13 yards to Austin Russell with :26 to play in the quarter.

Jeffrey completed 26-of-47 passes for 272 yards, the four scores and one interception as Millsaps amassed 420 yards of total offense. Russell had 10 catches for 102 yards and three touchdowns.

Fritz Walker III rushed for 67 yards and a score on 14 carries for the Majors. Walker III also supplied three catches for 19 yards and a touchdown.

The Blue Jays' other score came on an 11-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Wyatt Ellis to freshman wide receiver Travion Mosby with 13:05 remaining in the game.

Ellis finished 15-of-26 for only 89 yards and was intercepted once, while Mosby logged five catches for 51 yards. Westminster rushed for a sparse 31 yards as a team.

The Blue Jays travel to Iowa Wesleyan University for their Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opener at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
