College wrestling: Westminster's Sax goes 1-2 at Division III championships

ROANOKE, Va. - Freshman Sean Sax finished 1-2 at 149 pounds for the Blue Jays after being eliminated at the NCAA Division III national championships Friday.

Sax - Westminster College's first-ever national qualifier - ended the season with a 22-5 record. Sax opened competition Friday by knocking off No. 3 seed Stephen Maloney of Messiah in a 6-2 decision.

Sax then suffered a narrow 4-3 loss to Alex Wilson of Augsburg, before exiting the national championships after dropping an 11-8 decision to Ryan Snow of Brockport.

"Sean is a great kid and Mike and I are so proud of him," Westminster head coach Tony Eierman said. "He had a great team and great wrestling partners all year. He expected to win the national title this weekend and that's what we train them to believe.

"He is a great leader and teammate and we aren't disappointed in today one bit."
