Women's basketball: Lady Owls whip Stephens, move win streak to five

Chapla ties school record for victories with No. 249

William Woods University freshman forward Katie French connected for a career-high 20 points and the Lady Owls stretched their winning streak to five games with a 79-42 AMC blitz of Stephens College on Saturday at Anderson Arena.

The victory was also head coach Dan Chapla's 249th at William Woods, tying him with Roger Ternes for the most wins in school history. The Lady Owls - now 8-0 at home this season - improved to 13-6 overall and 9-4 in the American Midwest Conference.

Saturday's contest was tied at 19-all after one quarter, but William Woods took control by tallying 10 unanswered points to open the second quarter. Junior guard Ashleigh Frampton's basket in the paint gave the Lady Owls a 29-19 advantage with 5 minutes, 31 seconds remaining in the first half.

French sent William Woods into halftime with a 41-25 lead when she scored in the lane with :35 to go. The Lady Owls then pulled away behind a 14-0 run to begin the third quarter, building a 55-25 edge on Frampton's 3-pointer at the 5:38 mark.

William Woods was up by as many as 41 points in the fourth quarter.

Junior guard Peyton Greenlee also provided 14 points for the Lady Owls, who shot 52 percent (32-of-62) from the field. French hit 10-of-13 shots and also collected a team-high six rebounds to guide William Woods to a commanding 43-26 advantage on the boards.

Chalee Britt countered with 18 points as the only player to finish in double figures for Stephens (3-16, 1-2). The Lady Stars shot just 30 percent (17-of-56) as a team.

The Lady Owls were coming off a 74-70 AMC victory at Park University on Thursday night. Junior guard Kaycee Gerald delivered a career-high 24 points and 14 rebounds to spark William Woods.

The Lady Owls - who also defeated Park 75-68 on Nov. 15 in Fulton - took a 36-28 lead into halftime Thursday night and held on for the win despite being outscored 42-38 in the second half.

Freshman forward Kasey Hazell chipped in with 15 points for William Woods, which shot 44 percent (28-of-64) for the game. Frampton logged 13 points and Greenlee had 11.

Powered by Gerald, the Lady Owls outrebounded the Lady Pirates 45-36.

Deja Johnson-Ford supplied 17 points to pace Park, which shot 42 percent (26-of-62) from the field. Chantell Greer finished with 14 points.

William Woods goes to St. Louis for an AMC contest at Harris-Stowe State University at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
