College Baseball: Helsel named GLVC pitcher of the week

SPRINGFIELD - Drury freshman Kaden Helsel was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Helsel (South Callaway High School) allowed just one hit in his first collegiate start Saturday, a 7-0 win against St. Edwards in Austin, Texas.

Helsel carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the eighth inning, when Nathan Medrano hit a one-out single to right field. Helsel left the game after that, finishing with 7 scoreless innings while allowing four walks and striking out nine to earn his first career win.

In two appearances this season, Helsel has walked five and struck out 13, allowing just the one hit in 9 innings of scoreless work.

In his first collegiate appearance Feb. 9, Helsel pitched two scoreless innings to earn a save in a 5-4 win against Arkansas Tech.

Drury (2-4) hosts Lewis on Friday in its home opener.
