Men's basketball: Missouri Valley 86, William Woods 78

The Owls suffered their second loss in a row as the Vikings built a double-digit lead late in the game Wednesday night at Anderson Arena.

William Woods University (2-2) led by as many as seven points in the first half. Missouri Valley College (2-0) then outscored the Owls 22-13 over the last 7 minutes, 1 second to take a slim 46-44 edge into halftime.

Junior guard Treshawn Gause converted a pair of free throws to bring William Woods within 68-66 with 6:57 remaining in the game. However, the Vikings countered with a 13-5 run to open up a 10-point advantage.

Alonzo Williams made one-of-two free throws to put Missouri Valley up 81-71 with 2:26 to go. The Vikings twice owned 11-point leads before closing out the eight-point victory.

Junior forward David Johnson Jr. connected on 6-of-12 shots and hit 9-of-12 free throws to pace the Owls with a game-high 21 points. Johnson Jr. rounded out a double-double by pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds, even though Missouri Valley finished with a 50-36 advantage on the boards.

Junior guard Austin Curry and freshman guard Aaron Brookins - coming off the bench - contributed 14 points apiece for William Woods. The Owls shot just 34 percent (21-of-61) from the field.

Larry Plummer scored 13 points to lead three players in double figures for the Vikings, who shot 48 percent (29-of-61) as a team. Williams followed with 11 points and Tremont Moore added 10.

William Woods plays at William Penn (Iowa) University at 3 p.m. Saturday.
