Women's tennis: No. 7 William Woods rolls to NAIA first-round victory

MOBILE, Ala. - The seventh-ranked Lady Owls eased past Southwestern (Kansas) College 9-0 in the first round of the 38th-annual NAIA women's national championship Tuesday at the Mobile Tennis Center.

No. 10 seed William Woods University - which is making its third consecutive appearance at the national championship - advanced to play No. 7 University of Northwestern Ohio in the second round at 9 this morning. Northwestern earned a first-round bye.

No. 1 singles: junior Karyna Sagalai (WWU) defeated Esperanza Contador (SC), 6-1, 6-0; No. 2: sophomore Zlata Shuraeva (WWU) def. Anna Mankoski (SC), 6-0, 6-0; No. 3: freshman Ana Zavala (WWU) def. Brailey McMinn (SC), 6-3, 6-0; No. 4: junior Felicia Cesar (WWU) def. Abigaill Groff (SC), 6-1, 6-4; No. 5: junior Chelsea Steward (WWU) def. Meghan Kindred (SC), 6-0, 6-0; No. 6: junior Julia Mulder (WWU) def. Jerlecia Thompson (SC), 6-0, 6-0.

No. 1 doubles: Shuraeva/Zavala (WWU) def. Contador/Groff (SC), 8-1; No. 2: Mulder/junior Abigail Lemberger (WWU) def. Mankoski/Kindred (SC), 8-1; No. 3: Cesar/Steward (WWU) def. McMinn/Thompson (SC), 8-4.
