Baseball: William Woods 4-5, Baker (Kan.) 2-2

Senior left fielder Patrick Dillon's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a 2-all tie in the second game, helping the Owls sweep the Wildcats in Thursday's home opener at Backer Sports Complex.

Senior first baseman Tyler Cunningham had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs for William Woods University (5-4) in its victory in the opener.

Baker University (0-4) went in front with two runs in the top of the fourth in the nightcap, but the Owls pulled even in their half of the inning on a two-out, two-run single up the middle by Dillon.

The game remained tied until another two-run single up the middle by Dillon - this one coming with no outs - gave William Woods a 4-2 lead. The Owls tacked on their final run later in the inning on freshman pinch-hitter Connor Poulson's RBI groundout.

Dillon finished 2-for-3 with four RBI as William Woods ended up with six hits. Senior right fielder Nolan Aherin was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and junior center fielder Tyler Bracht went 1-for-3 and scored twice.

Senior Dany Paradis-Giroux tossed 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for the Owls, who overcame four errors. Paradis-Giroux (2-0) scattered two hits, struck out three and walked one.

Junior reliever Jeremy Hidalgo got the final out of the game to record his second save of both the day and the season.

The first game was scoreless until William Woods tallied two runs in the fifth. Cunningham doubled deep down the third-base line with no outs and scored later on a throwing error, while Aherin's RBI double to deep center with one out made it 2-0.

The Wildcats answered with two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game, but Cunningham delivered a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the inning to put the Owls on top to stay.

Cunningham finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Aherin was 1-for-3 with an RBI as William Woods collected six hits again. Dillon went 1-for-2 with a run scored and senior second baseman Glen DesBouillons was 1-for-3 and scored once.

Junior starter Taran Oulton allowed two runs - both unearned - on seven hits over six innings to log his first victory of the season for the Owls. Oulton (1-1) struck out six and issued one walk.

Hidalgo worked a scoreless seventh to pick up the save, giving up one hit and striking out two.
