Blue Jays bow in 10-7 UMAC loss at Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Westminster College Blue Jays football team committed five turnovers and was unable to complete a late rally in a 10-7 UMAC loss to the University of Northwestern on Saturday.

The loss was the second in a row for Westminster, which slipped to 1-3 on the season and 1-2 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Northwestern evened its overall record at 2-2 and improved to 2-1 in the UMAC.

The Blue Jays trailed 10-0 when they came up with their lone score on senior quarterback Trent White's 15-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Lucas Robinson with 2 minutes, 6 seconds left in the game.

The Eagles delivered all of their scoring in the second quarter. Taylor Lindahl threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Evan Pruitt and Ben Lyons tacked on a 27-yard field goal.

Westminster had its chances but was just 1-for-6 in red-zone opportunities. The Blue Jays lost three fumbles inside Northwestern's 5-yard line, turned the ball over on downs once and also had a field-goal attempt blocked.

Westminster bowed despite owning a 247-201 advantage in total yards. White finished 16-of-26 passing for 174 yards and the touchdown, but also threw two interceptions.

Senior running back Chase Abbington led the Blue Jays with 48 yards rushing on 17 carries. Junior wide receiver Matt Quarles had four catches for a team-high 60 yards.

Westminster plays its homecoming game against UMAC opponent Martin Luther (Minnesota) at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Priest Field.
