Westminster has strong showing in wrestling debut

DECATUR, Ill. - Freshmen Christian Mayberry and Hunter Tessman each notched victories in the Millikin Open on Saturday, the first-ever for the Blue Jays program as it made its debut.

"With having a first year program with just freshmen, we're probably not even supposed to get a win," Westminster head coach Tony Eierman said. "All of these programs have upperclassmen and a lot more experience, but all of our guys came out and competed.

"They give us their heart and soul, and (co-head coach) Mike (Eierman) and I couldn't be happier."

Tessman earned the top finish for the squad with a second-place finish in the open 184-pound division. After getting a bye in the first round, Tessman defeated junior Tanner Zimmerman of Central College by pinfall.

He then went on to tally two more wins against freshmen Griffin Meeker of Millikin and Wayne Sommerlot of Central, before falling in the championship to Christos Giatras in a 10-9 decision.

Mayberry earned a bye in his first round before defeating Triton College sophomore Michael Lobianco. Mayberry would fall to Central senior Jared Foiles in the next round.

Westminster will compete in the Concordia Open on Saturday in Mequon, Wisconsin.
