Softball: Central Methodist sweeps William Woods in doubleheader

The WWU Lady Owls were swept 15-1 and 13-7 by the No. 20 Central Methodist Lady Eagles in a doubleheader at the Backer Sports Complex on Sunday.

In the nightcap, William Woods University (5-4) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after it scored two runs in the first inning and two in the second. Central Methodist (4-4) took an 11-4 advantage after it produced three runs in the third inning, four in the fourth and four in the fifth.

The Lady Owls came up with a run in the sixth and both teams scored two in the seventh.

Senior third baseman Madison McCormick went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in as William Woods totaled 10 hits. Senior catcher Brailee Schulte was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while senior second baseman Beth Begemann went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Sophomore first baseman Alli Massey went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Junior starter Bre Logan (1-1) threw 4 1/3 innings to take the loss for the Lady Owls. Logan allowed eleven runs - nine earned - struck out two, and walked four.

In the opener, the Lady Eagles took advantage of seven errors committed by William Woods. The Lady Owls took a 1-0 lead after it came up with a run in the second. Central Methodist scored four runs in the third, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and eight in the seventh.

Senior center fielder Hannah Campbell went 2-for-4 with an RBI as William Woods collected six hits. Schulte - who played second base - was 1-for-3 with a double.

Junior starter Allison Waskow (0-3) took the loss for the Lady Owls. In 6 1/3 innings, Waskow allowed 13 runs - two earned - on 11 hits, struck out six and walked one.

On Saturday, the Lady Owls swept the Briar Cliff (Iowa) University Lady Chargers in a doubleheader at the Backer Sports Complex. William Woods won the first game 4-0 and took the second game 3-1.

In the opener, the Lady Owls came up with a run in the first, two in the third and one in the fourth.

Sophomore shortstop Dacrie Depping went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored as William Woods totaled eight hits. Sophomore third baseman Amanda Bouchey was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI.

Senior starter Sierra Jacques (2-0) went the distance to pick up the win for William Woods. Jacques allowed four hits, struck out three and walked one.

In the nightcap, the Lady Owls took the lead after they scored a run in the first. Both teams produced a run in the second and William Woods added a run in the fifth.

Campbell was 1-for-2 with a triple and two runs scored as the Lady Owls totaled five hits.

Freshman starter Madison Ausfahl (2-0) - a North Callaway graduate - went the distance to earn the victory for William Woods. Ausfahl gave up an earned run on six hits, struck out three and walked one.

The Lady Owls play a doubleheader at Oklahoma Wesleyan University at 1 p.m. Saturday.
