Owls split non-conference doubleheader with Baker

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - The William Woods Owls split a doubleheader with the Baker University Wildcats on Sunday.

William Woods (2-6) lost the first game 6-4 and won the second game 3-2.

In the nightcap, Baker (3-5) scored a run in the second inning. William Woods (2-6) tied the game after it scored a run in the third, but the Wildcats took a 2-1 lead after they produced a run in the fourth.

The Owls took the final lead after they scored two runs in the fifth.

Senior catcher Jalen Poindexter was 1-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in as William Woods collected eight hits. Senior starter Ryan Phillips went 2-for-3 and junior shortstop Glen DesBouillons was 1-for-3 with a double.

Phillips (1-1) went the distance to pick up the win for the Owls. Phillips allowed two runs - one earned - on seven hits, struck out 10 and walked one.

The Owls led off the opener by scoring two runs in the top of the first. The Wildcats came up with a run in the bottom of the frame and William Woods came up with a run in the third to extend its lead to 3-1.

Baker produced five runs in the fourth to take a 6-3 advantage. William Woods added a run in the seventh.

Poindexter - who was the designated hitter - went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI as the Owls totaled eight hits. Junior first baseman Tyler Cunningham was 1-for-2 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored.

Junior starter Dany Paradis-Giroux (0-2) took the loss for the Owls. In 3 1/3 innings, Paradis-Giroux allowed four earned runs on five hits, struck out four and walked two.

The Owls also split a doubleheader with the Wildcats on Saturday. William Woods picked up its first win of the season and ended a four-game losing streak with a 6-3 win in the opener, but lost the nightcap 6-3.

In the first game, the Owls scored three runs in the top of the first and the Wildcats tallied a run in the bottom of the frame. William Woods produced two runs in the second to stretch its advantage to 5-1. Baker scored a run in the third and a run in the fifth to cut the deficit to 5-3. The Owls added a run in the seventh.

Phillips - who was playing second base - went 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored as the Owls totaled 11 hits. Cunningham was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while junior left fielder Patrick Dillon was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Junior starter Ryan Furtney went the distance to pick up the win in his first start of the season. Furtney allowed three earned runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked one.

In the second game, William Woods scored two runs in the top of the first. Baker produced a run in the bottom of the first, one in the second and one in the third to take a 3-2 lead.

The Owls came up with a run in the top of the fifth and the Wildcats tallied three in the bottom of the frame.

Cunningham - who was the designated hitter - went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Junior starter Chase Feucht (0-2) threw 4 1/3 innings to take the loss for William Woods. He allowed six runs - five earned - on seven hits, struck out two and walked three.

William Woods will face William Penn (Iowa) University and Graceland (Iowa) University in its first day of the Joplin Tournament on Friday. The Owls play the Statesman at noon and the Yellowjackets at 2:30 p.m.
