Immanuel guides Blue Jays to fourth consecutive win

CLAYTON, Mo. - Westminster College senior midfielder David Immanuel delivered two goals Tuesday night in helping guide the Blue Jays soccer team to its fourth straight victory, a 4-0 SLIAC triumph over Fontbonne University.

Westminster improved to 11-3-1 on the season and moved into second place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 6-1-1, just behind leader Spalding University (10-6, 8-0). Fontbonne is now 7-10-1 overall and slipped into third place in conference play at 6-2.

"We had a gutsy performance tonight," Blue Jays head coach Adam Galla said. "We had a lot of guys with injuries and the character we showed tonight was phenomenal.

"To go on the road against a quality side and get a result was big for us. I couldn't be more proud of this group."

Immanuel logged his first goal in the 14th minute, off an assist from senior midfielder Kyle Collins. Immanuel then made it 2-0 when he scored in the 50th minute off sophomore midfielder Cooper Smith's assist.

Junior midfielder Dustin Seibolt's goal in the 78th minute was assisted by senior forward Drake Trease, who topped off Westminster's scoring with an unassisted goal in the 88th minute.

The Blue Jays outshot the Griffins by a commanding 18-6 margin, including 11-1 in shots on goal. Westminster also had a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Freshman goalkeeper Ben Chesher needed just one save to earn the victory for the Blue Jays.

Westminster finishes the regular season at SLIAC opponent MacMurray (Illinois) College at 3 p.m. Saturday.
