William Woods golf teams sweep titles

COLUMBIA, Mo. - William Woods University senior Billy McKenzie shot a 2-under par 140 (70-70) to secure the individual championship as the Owls golf team concluded its fall schedule by winning the Columbia Cougar Classic on Tuesday.

In the women's division, junior Katie Warren captured individual honors with a 4-over 150 (74-76) to help William Woods complete a sweep of the team titles at Columbia Country Club.

McKenzie was one of four Owls to end up in the top 10 as the William Woods men compiled a 13-over 581 team score (295-286). Host Columbia College was second with a 597 and Lincoln University took third with a 608.

Junior Jack Clarkson finished third with a 144 (74-70) for the Owls, while senior David Houlding came in seventh with a 147 (74-73). Sophomore James Rogers tied for 10th with a 150 (77-73) and sophomore Mark Martin ended up in a four-way tie for 25th with a 159 (77-82).

Meanwhile, Warren led five Lady Owls in the top 10 as the William Woods women accumulated a 36-over 620 team total (317-303). Columbia College was a distant second with a 683, while Baker (Kansas) University was third with a 694.

Junior Fumika Matsumoto came in a shot behind Warren in second place with a 151 (78-73), followed by freshman Jade Shellback in third with a 157 (80-77). Junior Megan Cullen was sixth with a 163 (86-77), while juniors Alex Bankovich (85-84) and Nikki Callahan - playing as an individual - shared eighth place with a pair of 169s.
