Callaway pushing for more stops on tourism bus tours

The Tourism Board hopes to attract a wider variety of bus tours to Callaway County. One of the themes would be Christmas holiday to showcase the area's celebration of the holiday.

The Tourism Board is hoping to expand the variety of bus tours in Callaway County.

The board has written a rough draft of a proposal to send to bus tour companies. Currently, tourism board member Cathy McGeorge said, bus tours stop by Crane's and the National Churchill Museum before moving onto another city.

McGeorge, also the owner of the Loganberry Inn, said the board is pitching four themed bus tours to the bus tour companies - arts and antiques, chocolate, history and Christmas holiday - to showcase the unique businesses and activities in the county.

Themes are also used to better market the bus tours and encourage participation, McGeorge said, and more could be added in the future.

"It's about keeping things fresh, keeping things new," she said.

Bus tour expansion, she added, would encourage people to stay in the county longer instead of stopping by.

This could financially benefit Callaway County. A two-day, overnight bus tour brings in about $14,000, according to McGeorge.

New bus tours will include the entire county and not downtown Fulton solely.

Claudia Starr, Director of the Fulton Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor's Center, said more county-wide tourist attractions and businesses have been included on the bus tour must-see places. By incorporating the whole county, McGeorge said, bus tours are able to offer something unique.

"We try to offer something you can't get on an every day basis," McGeorge said.
