Fundraiser planned for Calwood couple left homeless after fire

March 5th, 2014 in News

A Calwood couple lost its home to fire in February, but family and friends have not lost hope.

The Weiser Family Benefit Dinner, Bake Sale and Silent Auction will be noon to 6 p.m. March 15 at Heartland Church's gym, 1410 Mokane Road in Fulton.

Proceeds from the event will help with recovery and medical bills for Vic and Chris Weiser, who lost their belongings and pets when heat tape on their water lines caught fire Feb. 10.

The event is organized by the Weiser's grandchildren, cousins Kadie Atterberry and Melanie Stotler. Texas Roadhouse in Columbia is donating pulled pork, corn, green beans and rolls to be sold for $5 a plate. Children's face painting will be $1.

"Grandma and Grandpa have done a lot to help the community and have a lot of friends," Atterberry said. "Grandpa is the type of person who's never met a stranger. Anyone who says, "Hey I need help,' they're there. And they've done so much to help Melanie and me that we wanted to give back."

A variety of baked goods will be sold, and the silent auction will close at 5:30 p.m. Items up for grabs include front-row tickets to a Cardinals game, quilts, items donated from Sweet Temptations and various gift baskets.

The Weisers were awakened by fire and had to escape their Calwood home on a cold morning Feb. 10. Vic Weiser had to pull his wife to safety and sustained frostbite on his feet, which have required several doctor's visits and still need to be treated regularly.
