Callaway County residents who want to avoid a lump-sum payments on their real estate taxes have until Feb. 15 to do so.
Registration for the county's quarterly installment plan remains open for the next two weeks. Homeowners under the program may pay off their real estate with four payments over the year at a rate based on what they had paid in the previous year.
Callaway adopted the program in 2012. Callaway County Collector Pam J. Oestreich told the Fulton Sun that in that time, about 250 people have registered.
"There was a state law that was passed back when Gracia Backer was state representative, so it's been on the statutes for a long time - we just got to the point where we had the software capability to implement it," Oestreich said. "Individuals have the ability to pay quarterly instead of at the end of the year, and with people being out of work or older folks being on Social Security, that really helps them."
