For more than a decade, Callaway Christian Church has called upon area residents to serve as Good Samaritans - donating old clothing and household items to be given to their neighbors in need.
The church's annual Fall Giveaway will be 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at 2051 Silver Drive in Fulton.
The semi-annual event will provide clothing, household supplies and other miscellaneous items at no cost to those who attend. Giveaway organizer Anne Erbschloe said items available include linens, curtains, knick knacks and numerous baby items ranging from clothing to playpens and strollers.
"Our entire fellowship hall is completely packed with stuff to give away - we have a lot of clothing for kids," said church member Todd Winterbower, who has spent this week helping to prepare for Saturday's giveaway. "I'm looking forward to our church being able to help some folks that may not have the resources."
He said Saturday's event continues to draw a "great response" from the community.
"First from people donating and second with the 600 to 700 folks coming out for the giveaway," Winterbower said. "It's really amazing the things we have - everything from clothes to household goods - and it's amazing how little is left after a couple of hours."
Erbschloe said the continued popularity of the giveaway is due in large part to the continued strain on the economy.
"People are really hurting because of the way the economy is," she said. "Jobs are scarce, salaries aren't high, and it's really tough to make ends meet."
