Authorities advise Callaway County travelers to be cautious near flooded roads

Memorial Day travelers are advised to be cautious along low-water bridges and several areas along U.S. 54 after a storm dumped heavy rains on Callaway County Monday afternoon.

Callaway County Emergency Management Director Michelle Kidwell said that, while no roads have been closed by the County or the Missouri Department of Transportation, many areas along 54 had about three inches of water on the road.

Areas noted by law enforcement to experience flooding include:

•54 north of County Road 209

•54 at the junction of I-70

•54 north of Kingdom City near Ferrellgas

Kidwell noted that the conditions were still drivable and that most congestion found on 70 and 54 were due to poor visibility during the storm rather than impassable conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, the majority of flood fatalities in 2012 - 39 percent - were caused by driving, and that it only takes 18 inches of water to lift a car or SUV. The NWS advises never to drive into water covering the road, as the road could be washed out or the water could be deeper than it appears.
