Callaway County Humane Society to host "Great American Rubber Ducky Race'

July 17th, 2013 in News

Animal lovers are encouraged to flock to Stinson Creek on Saturday, Aug. 10 ,to catch the Callaway County Humane Society's inaugural "Great American Rubber Ducky Race."

The fundraiser event will pit a brace of 300 yellow rubber ducks in a race down three-quarters of a mile of the creek, starting 10 a.m. near Westminster College and ending at the covered bridge at Memorial Park. Ducks will be sold for $5 per duck or $35 for 10, with the first duck across the finish line earning its owner $100.

Second place is worth $50 and the third-place winner earns $25. All proceeds benefit the humane society.

Event organizer Nancy Hickman said the idea for the event came last year when planning senior parent events at South Callaway High School.

"One of the other mothers said they did it in her hometown for their senior class, so we wanted to try and organize it, but never could find a real good place to do it at," Hickman said. "This year I happened to think we could use Stinson Creek ... to support the humane society."

Should dry weather create shallow patches, Hickman said volunteers are lined up to wade along the "race path" and toss ducks into water if need be.
