Churchill museum to host Hallmark exhibition

January 11th, 2013 in News

This scale model of Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill, was commissioned by Hallmark Cards founder Joyce Hall. The model is part of a new exhibit opening at the National Churchill Museum on Jan. 16.

The National Churchill Museum has dug into its archives to put together a new exhibit culled from donations from Hallmark Cards founder Joyce Hall and The Hall Foundation.

The Hallmark Exhibition opens on Jan. 16. Entrance is free from 5:30-7 p.m. and there will be refreshments.

Archivist Liz Murphy said she put the Hallmark Exhibit together because "we have a lot of different pieces from the Hall Foundation that have not been on view for years."

"We have several political cartoons of Winston Churchill, a scale model of Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Churchill and the last piece is six John Churchill paintings that depict Winston Churchill's funeral procession."

According to an article on the museum website, Hall commissioned the scale model of Blenheim Palace - home of the dukes of Marlborough - for the Churchill Pavilion at the New York World's Fair. Hall became friends with Churchill after meeting the famous diplomat in Fulton when he made the Iron Curtain speech and was a co-chair for the efforts to found the original Winston Churchill Memorial and Library at Westminster College.
