Southside to honor vets with plaque at service Sunday

November 9th, 2012 in News

For the veterans of Southside Baptist Church's congregation, the Veterans Day services Sunday will give them an opportunity to become part of the church itself.

In addition to testimony, music and presenting of colors from the Color Guard, veterans will have a chance to have their name on an engraved plaque to be placed in the church vestibule.

The plaque would join an older list of about 30 other names of Southside's veterans from older conflicts leading up to Vietnam.

Pastor Guy Thomas, who himself served with the Marines in Vietnam from 1970 to 1973, said that it was time to show recognition for some of the more recent members of their church and the military.

"The church is 53 years old, so we've got all the past veterans from World War 1, World War 2, Korean and Vietnam. Right now that plaque is full, so we're adding a new plaque with Gulf War veterans, Iraq, Afghanistan and all of them that have been members of the church," Thomas said.
