Blue Jays' Givens, Bromberg gather up UMAC football honors

Two Westminster College Blue Jays collected the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference's first offensive and defensive weekly football honors announced Tuesday.

Westminster senior wide receiver Carl Givens, coming off a sizzling performance in the Blue Jays' 51-24, season-opening blowout of Rockford College, was named the UMAC's offensive player of the week. Meanwhile, Blue Jays junior linebacker Josh Bromberg was singled out as the conference's defensive player of the week.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Givens - a Chesterfield native - had eight catches for 167 yards and three touchdowns last Saturday in Westminster's home opener at Priest Field. Givens had scoring catches of 70, 11 and 31 yards, and also supplied a 52-yard touchdown run.

Bromberg (5-11, 190), from St. Charles, logged 10 tackles on Saturday, including two for a loss. He also recovered one of the two fumbles he forced.

The Blue Jays travel to St. Paul, Minn., for their UMAC opener against Northwestern at 1 p.m. Saturday.
