Circulating petition opposes closure of Portland Post Office

A petition opposing possible closure of the Portland Post Office is circulating in the Portland area.

The Portland Post Office is one of 3,700 United States small post offices, mostly in rural areas, that have been targeted by the United States Postal Service for possible closure.

Terry Rehma, who owns a farm two miles north of Portland, said the petition asking that the Portland Post Office remain open will be available for people to sign during Saturday's Portland shooting match fundraiser to benefit the Portland Community Center.

Rehma said about 50 people appeared at last week's public hearing by the Postal Service on the possible closure.

To help the tornado-stricken people of Dumas and surroundings, donations can be made to the Delta Area Disaster Relief Fund, care of the Delta Area Community Foundation, P.O. Box 894, Dumas, AR, 71639, or through the Arkansas Community Foundation, 700 S. Rock St., Little Rock, AR, 72202.
