The Fulton Hornets tennis team swept singles play in posting its first win of the season Thursday night, 8-1 over visiting Columbia Independent.
Fulton - rebounding nicely after a 12-0 home loss to North Central Missouri Conference foe Hannibal on Tuesday - squared its season record at 1-1.
"You always want to break the ice," Hornets head coach Louis Schnoebelen said. "We were expecting to do pretty well."

•No. 1 singles: sophomore Josh Hurt (F) defeated Eli Peake (CI) 6-0, 6-0; No. 2: senior Sean Flynn (F) def. Alex Chavez (CI) 6-0, 6-0; No. 3: senior Kody Renner (F) def. Marco Kroezer (CI) 6-1, 6-0; No. 4: sophomore Scott Strough (F) def. Zac Stelzer (CI) 6-1, 6-3; No. 5: sophomore Trevor Steinbeck (F) def. "I liked the way the guys were taking (the match) seriously, and they played well," Schnoebelen said. "Sometimes you can play down to the level of your opponent and we didn't do that.
"The players had some performance goals to keep them sharp."
Fulton travels to Jefferson City to face Helias at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Wildcats golf team starts
with fourth-place finishes
NEW BLOOMFIELD - The Wildcats golf team opened its season this week with a pair of fourth-place finishes.
New Bloomfield compiled a team score of 244 in Monday's quad meet at California. The host Pintos took first place with a 183, Versailles was second with a 208, Russellville third with a 237 and the Wildcats followed in fourth.
New Bloomfield then accumulated a 216 team total on Tuesday in a quad meet at Eugene. The host Eagles came in first with a 161, Dixon finished second with a 179, School of the Osage was third with a 197 and the Wildcats ended up fourth.
Fulton Kids Wrestling Club
qualifies 14 for state
Fourteen members of the Fulton Parks and Rec Kids Wrestling Club qualified for the state tournament during the MO-USA Region D Tournament on March 12.
Fulton's qualifiers for this weekend's state tournament at the Hearnes Center in Columbia include:

It was incorrectly reported in Thursday's edition that William Woods University senior forward Rachel Baker was a third-team selection on the 2010-11 NAIA All-American Division I women's basketball team. Baker was a second-team pick.
