Celia the slave event spurs discussion of hanging's location

The location of Celia's execution has once again come under scrutiny.

With the passing of the Seventh Annual Celia Commemoration on Dec. 21, questions surface as to where the slave woman was actually hanged. According to some, it has been inaccurately stated at times - including during the commemorations - that Celia was hanged at the Callaway County Courthouse. It is believed she most likely faced the gallows in Star Park.

Sylvia Rummel, of Fulton, said it's important that the Cultural Competence Council - which organizes the Celia memorial - present a historical event accurately.

"I'm not objecting to the event itself," she said. "I wanted to make sure they got their facts straight."
