YMCA's first community garden sprouts success

The community garden located next to the Fulton Fire Department is yielding a variety of different produce in its first year.

While she described it as "definitely a learning experience," Patty Miller, executive director of the YMCA of Callaway County, said the first summer of the organization's new community garden project definitely has been a good one.

"We've had 20 or more participants growing everything from sunflowers to corn and squash, lots of tomatoes, lots of peppers," Miller said. "All our participants ended up with a 10x4 plot, and it was their decision what they wanted to grow.

"It's been a good mix (of participants); we've had some master gardeners involved and some people who have never really gardened before."
