Ameren Missouri, which owns and operates the Callaway Nuclear Power Plant, is considering the option of building an array of smaller and less costly nuclear power reactors instead of one large 1,600 megawatt nuclear reactor.
The utility also wants the Missouri General Assembly to consider nuclear plant legislation in next month's special session to help Missouri attract a $250 million federal grant to build a small modular nuclear reactor.
Warren Wood, Ameren Missouri vice president for regulatory and legislative affairs, said Monday Ameren Missouri still is considering a large 1,600 megawatt nuclear reactor as part of a consortium with other private and municipal-owned utilities along with rural electric cooperatives. But now Ameren and its partners have another option of building one or more smaller modular reactors that are currently under development.
