PORTLAND, Mo. - A wanted Mokane man was arrested Wednesday after crashing a stolen vehicle, Lt. Curtis Hall, of the Callaway County Sheriff's Office, said.

Michael Schnieders, 28, was wanted in Cole County for a felony probation violation and failure-to-appear offenses. He was also arrested for tampering with a motor vehicle, felony property damage and felony leaving the scene of an accident, Hall said.

At 2:53 p.m., deputies were called to the area of State Highway 94 and State Road D near Portland after "several citizens" reported a suspicious person in the area. While investigating, deputies were told a man had attempted to steal a vehicle at a residence, and had then crashed the vehicle into another vehicle and a residence. He then fled on foot, Hall said.

Deputies found the suspect, later identified as Schnieders, in downtown Portland. He initially gave a false identity, Hall added.

Schnieders was taken into custody and transported to the Callaway County Jail, where he was held without bond, per the Cole County warrants.
