Fulton man dies in apparent hit-and-run

A pedestrian was struck and killed on U.S. 54 Sunday, according to Lt. Dall Hedges of the Fulton Police Department.

Dustin Anderson, of Fulton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

At 1:36 a.m. Sunday, police received a report of person walking in the roadway, Hedges said. Before officers arrived, additional callers reported the subject had been struck by a vehicle near County Road 306.

Officers arrived and found a man who had been struck by a vehicle, which had left the scene.

Police declined to reveal the man's name Sunday until his family could be notified but confirmed his identity Monday. The FPD and Missouri Highway Patrol are investigating the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Fulton Police Department, Missouri Highway Patrol or local law enforcement, Hedges said.

"I have not gotten any (word) that there was any eyewitnesses," said FPD Chief Steve Myers.

He said the FPD is still working on the case, and he hoped to be briefed on progress Monday afternoon or Tuesday.

Fulton Soup Kitchen President Katherine Bader said Anderson was a regular volunteer.

"He helped here often and always (lent) a hand," she said. "He was always happy and willing to talk and help. He helped carry food in, pull chicken (off) the bones for meals, (take out) trash and even do dishes for me. He was a true blessing for us here and will be greatly missed."

At 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, there will be a balloon release at the John C. Harris Community Center in Anderson's honor, Bader said. Anderson's family, friends and the public are welcome to attend.
