AUXVASSE, Mo. - Through a cooperative agreement between the Callaway County Sheriff's Office and the North Callaway R-1 School District, a dedicated School Resource Officer program will start Jan. 2.

Callaway County Sheriff's Deputy Zachery Carey will be the North Callaway R-1 SRO. Over the past few months, Carey has already participated in various programming and intervention efforts across the district, all in an effort to quickly become accustomed to the district students, staff, and administration.

In a joint statement, Superientendent Brian Garner and Sheriff Clay Chism stated: "We genuinely believe that Deputy Carey will be a great fit for the district, serving all district facilities. Deputy Carey is excited to meet patrons all across the district once he begins his assignment."

Carey will assist with security and safety measures throughout the district, and also assist school staff with an array of programming in an effort to enhance the overall student experience.

A sheriff's deputy for three years, Carey has a wide range of law enforcement training and experience. He is well respected amongst his peers and many have remarked that he is the obvious choice for this position given his personal and professional characteristics.

He has already completed the state certified SRO training in Jefferson City.
