Donations sought for ill Callaway man

On June 16, the International Association of Firefighters Local 3739 presented a check for $1,800 to Wes Miller for the purchase of a much-needed hospital bed.

The check was presented by Shawn Harmon, union president, and Jeremy Brixey, union treasurer. On hand to receive the check was Derek Back, the funding coordinator for the Wes Miller Help a Friend Project, also a union member. The IAFF Local 3739 is the union representing EMS workers at the Callaway County Ambulance District.

Miller is a long-time resident of Callaway County and was a Fulton High School agriculture teacher for more than 20 years. He is beloved by his former students and the community. He and his wife Peggy have always been the giving parties - but now they need help.

Not long ago, Miller fell ill, leaving him unable to care for his farm and even himself. Right now, he is unable to leave his house.

Currently, a major fundraising project is being organized on the Millers' behalf. The funds needed to assist him with regaining some level of comfort and easing the burden of caring for his condition will likely exceed $30,000. This does not include any medical care.

On Tuesday, Harmon and Back were traveling home from North Carolina with equipment for Miller, a deeply discounted bariatric lift from Tekyard Medical.

A "Go Fund Me" page will be launched soon, allowing donations to be made by individuals and organizations in a simple process.

Many individuals, as well as organizations such as the Callaway County Ambulance District and the Central Callaway Fire Protection District, have pledged their support to the project.
