Shelter staying open, here's how to help

By early Friday, nearly all of Callaway County had announced plans to shut down in anticipation of the predicted ice storm. Schools cancelled classes, and city halls and county government also closed.

However, some people rely on certain services to stay warm and fed. With SERVE, Inc. and the Fulton Soup Kitchen also closing for the storm in Fulton, that more or less leaves the Wiley House, which will be staying open for the weekend.

According to Brad Sheppard, director, the Wiley House is normally an overnight shelter. He said it will remain open until it is safe to return to just evening hours.

Here's what you can do to help some of the people sheltering there, according Wiley House.

- Bring food or schedule a pizza delivery to 831 Jefferson St. before the roads get bad. The shelter needs canned pasta, soup and stews; coffee and milk; breakfast cereal; deli meet and cheese.

- Donate on the website (www.ourhousecallaway.org) to cover additional food and heating expenses.

- Send your thoughts and prayers.
