A busy Fulton highway was closed nearly five hours Wednesday after a semitrailer hydroplaned, hit a guard rail and spilled diesel fuel, according to Fulton police.

There were no injuries in the one-vehicle accident that was reported at 1:48 p.m. According to Sgt. Joe Schramm, the crash took out more than 200 feet of guard rail along U.S. Route 54 near the Business 54 entrance ramp north of Fulton.

The crash punctured the semitrailer's fuel tanks, adding to the long cleanup time. According to Schramm, about 120 gallons of diesel spilled on the road, and into the grass on the side of the highway.

Schramm said the accident may have been caused by rainy conditions. He urged drivers to drive carefully in bad weather.

"Even though the speed limit says 70, you need to slow down so you can be able to control your vehicle," Schramm said.

He said no charges were filed.

"We figured the damage to the driver's brand new 2016 truck, that was totaled, was enough of a punishment," he said.
