Holts Summit sidewalk work begins

HOLTS SUMMIT - Workers began construction this week on a $246,000 sidewalk project in Holts Summit, said Mark Tate, director of streets and parking.

Work is being done along the west side of Summit Drive, from State Route OO to Mars Street. The city received an 80 percent grant from the Federal Highway Administration and the Missouri Department of Transportation to help pay for the project, Tate said.

"We look forward to the completion of this next phase of sidewalk construction, which will connect many of our citizens to the pedestrian routes we have developed in recent years," Tate said. "The need for this stretch of sidewalk is crucial to get the pedestrians off the shoulder of North Summit Drive and onto a safer ADA route."

Steve Schultz, an engineer with Bartlett and West, said drivers, pedestrians and cyclists should be alert to detours and closed traffic lanes during construction.

"Designing and building sidewalks are the most rewarding aspects of my career," Schultz said. "I've witnessed several of these projects over my career, and every project has different challenges. However, every project has the same goal, and that is to get pedestrians off the road and out of harm's way."

The project includes more than 1,800 feet of sidewalks, including curb and gutter, curb inlets, storm piping and driveway and pedestrian ramp improvements. The design engineer for the project is Bartlett and West of Jefferson City, and the contractor is Concrete Solution LLC of Linn.

The project is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 1.

Initial work includes storm sewer improvements and grade changes to provide an ADA-compliant walkway. Erosion and traffic control measures will be present throughout the entire duration of construction. Property owners with work being completed in front of their houses and businesses will see minimal impact, except when their driveways may be inaccessible for a short period of time as the new concrete cures, Tate said. The contractor will strive to keep the time that driveways are closed to a minimum.

Schultz said Bartlett and West and Concrete Solution will provide ample notice of any driveway closures so drivers will be prepared.
