The inspirational story of a blind hymn writer is the basis for an upcoming production at the Stained Glass Theatre.

"Songs in the Night" will be performed Sept. 8-17.

"It's a true story based on the life of Fanny Crosby," said Director Cheryl Belt. "She had over 900 songs credited to her."

The story focuses on her time at the New York Institute of the Blind.

"The ups and downs in life and what inspired her to write those songs is what is featured," Belt said. "There's comedy and drama throughout the whole show. She was a teacher at the institute and we look at her relationship with the children."

Belt said this is a good show for the whole family.

"There are a lot of issues revolving around family and in our cast we have several family members working together - a dad and daughter, a group of sisters as well as a mom, dad and kids," Belt said. "We've become a big family getting ready for this show."

Mark Howard will serve as the narrator and Hannah Chaney plays Crosby.

The Stained Glass Theatre is located at 830 E. High St. in Jefferson City. Tickets can be purchased at sgtmidmo.org.
