BBB offers back-to-school shopping tips

Tips from Better Business Bureau

Many schools have started already, and chances are you have done much of your back-to-school shopping. The National Retail Federation estimates parents with children in kindergarten through 12th grade will spend $673 on school supplies, uniforms and other incidentals.

Better Business Bureau has tips that can help you shop smartly and safely.

Sign up for emails from stores you patronize regularly. These emails may provide notices of sales, coupons, rebates or other ways to save on what you and your child need. You can always unsubscribe if you get too much email or do not find the alerts valuable. Be sure payment pages for websites are secure, and use a credit card to pay in case you need to challenge a charge.

Check online offerings. The internet is a great place to comparison shop. Before you go to the store, use your computer or phone to research pricing. Sometimes it is cheaper or more convenient to order online than to fight the crowds in stores.

Make a shopping list. Without a list, you are likely to buy more than you need or purchase the incorrect items. Many schools require you to provide a specific size or even a certain brand. Take the list with you when you shop.

Create a budget. Figuring out how much you can afford to spend will help you keep your purchases within your means. If you want to reduce spending, figure out where you can cut back. But keep in mind that you may be better off purchasing a higher quality item, especially if it will be used frequently.

Take advantage of discounts. Some stores offer student or teacher discounts. Others provide discounts if you join a loyalty program. Do not forget to look at clearance racks for items with marked down prices.

Understand refund and exchange policies. Before you buy, make sure you inquire about refund policies. Keep your receipts and bring them with you if you return any items.
