Blue Jays lose conference opener against the Griffins

FULTON -- The Westminster College Blue Jays hosted the Fontbonne University Griffins in the first conference series of the season for both teams on Saturday.

The Griffins won both games against the Blue Jays. Game 1 was 4-2, and Game 2 ended 15-2.

Game 1 vs. Fontbonne Griffins:

  • In a battle between the pitchers in Game 1, Derek Archer started on the mound for the Blue Jays, throwing 7⅔ innings, giving up five hits, two earned runs and striking out seven batters. Matt Trout and Ryan Mills relieved Archer. Trout finished the eighth inning for Archer, while Mills took on the ninth inning, giving up two runs and recording the loss.
  • The Blue Jays got four of their six hits in the last two innings. With runners on first and third, Troy Romero came up to the plate and put the ball in play to score Jason Pesold. Payton Whitehead hit a base knock to left field that scored Romero.

Inside the box score:

Romero: 1-4, one run, one RBI and a stolen base.

Whitehead: 2-4, one RBI.

Pesold: 1-4, one run and a double.

Game 2 vs. Fontbonne Griffins:

  • The Blue Jays had seven pitchers in total in Game 2. Bode Gebbink started on the mound, going 3⅔ innings and giving up eight hits. Coming into relief in Game 2 were Trout, Kobe Allen, Ben Kennebeck, Dawson Schuemann, Domenic Nordmann and Aydn Bradke.
  • The Blue Jays bats were on fire in Game 2 but could not score runs. The Blue Jays finished with 12 hits. Romero, Whitehead and Aden Pecka led the team. Together, they got six hits and a run.

Inside the box score:

  • Romero: 2-4, one run and a triple.
  • Whitehead: 2-4, one RBI and a double.
  • Pecka: 2-3.

The Blue Jays will host Principia College for a conference doubleheader on Tuesday. The first pitch is at noon.
