SC baseball goes 0-2 vs. Class 5 teams in Bank Classic pool play

UNION -- Taking on two Class 5 teams, the South Callaway Bulldogs went 0-2 in Pool B of the Bank Classic Friday at Union High School.

South Callaway, ranked second in Class 3 by the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association, lost 14-7 to the Rolla Bulldogs and 13-1 in six innings to the host Union Wildcats.

In its first pool play game, South Callaway (2-3) recorded five hits and committed four errors, while Rolla (2-3) notched nine hits and made an error.

Rolla took its first lead in the bottom of the second, when David Watkins stole home after getting hit by a pitch to begin the frame two batters earlier. The Class 5 Bulldogs added five runs to their lead to hold a 6-0 advantage through two innings.

Fighting back, South Callaway went in front at 7-6 in the top of the fourth. To do that, pinch runner Aiden Jenkins stole home as Owen Rees took second on a double steal with two outs.

That capped the Class 3 No. 2 Bulldogs' offense. South Callaway plated four runs in the third inning and three in the fourth.

Rolla went ahead for good at 8-7 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth as Jenson Thomas lined an RBI single to the shortstop. The Class 5 Bulldogs totaled four runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Ethan Edwards led South Callaway's offense, going 2-4 with a triple, single, walk, three RBI, a run, and two strikeouts. Rees's double accounted for the Class 3 No. 2 Bulldogs' second extra-base hit.

Nine-hole hitter Jack Mrozowicz guided Rolla at the plate, finishing 2-3 with a double, single, walk, two RBI and three runs. Kaden Reedy recorded a triple for the Class 5 Bulldogs.

Since each team registered a triple and double, Rolla's seven walks and five stolen bases, compared to South Callaway's five walks and two stolen bases, separated the teams.

Edwards (0-2) took the loss in relief of starter Dane Daugherty. In ⅔ inning, Edwards gave up four runs on three hits and walks and hit a batter.

Brady Feeler earned the win out of the bullpen for Rolla. Tossing the final 3⅓ innings, he gave up no runs on one hit and walk while striking out seven.

While it isn't state-ranked like South Callaway, Union (5-0) showed why it's undefeated.

The Wildcats registered eight hits and made two errors; the Bulldogs had no hits and four errors.

Scoreless through two innings, Union plated the game-deciding run on Nicholas D'Onofrio's bases-loaded walk with no outs in the top of the third. The Wildcats added eight runs to hold a 9-0 advantage through 2½ innings.

Tucker Jones, who reached on an error to lead off the frame, scored South Callaway's lone run when Chase Mealy grounded to the shortstop for a 6-4 fielder's choice, the second out in the bottom of the fourth.

Union ended the game an inning early after sending four runs in the top of the six and keeping South Callaway off the scoreboard in the bottom half.

In the offensive onslaught, all of the Wildcats' starting nine posted at least one hit. Samuel Calkins stood out most, going 2-3 with a double, single, walk, three RBI and a run. Gavin Mabe and Karson Eads also recorded doubles to round out Union's three extra-base hits.

South Callaway starter Jones (0-1) was tagged with the loss. In two innings, he allowed nine runs (eight earned) on seven hits, two walks and hit a batter while punching out one.

Logan Hansel hurled a six-inning complete-game, no-hit victory for Union, striking out nine and walking three while giving up no earned runs.

As the third-place finisher in Pool B, South Callaway faces the third-place team in Pool A, also a Class 3 ballclub, in Notre Dame: Cape Girardeau (3-2) in the fifth-place game at 9 a.m. today at Union High School. Then, Mokane's Bulldogs meet Cape Girardeau's Bulldogs in a bonus game at 11:30 a.m.
