Fulton boys tennis falls to Mexico by tighter margin than last year

MEXICO, Mo. -- Fulton boys tennis lost 3-6 to North Central Missouri Conference rival/district opponent Mexico, an improvement over last year's 2-7 result, Friday at Mexico High School.

The Hornets dropped to 0-3 overall and in the NCMC, and the Bulldogs jumped to .500 overall at 2-2 and opened NCMC play 1-0.

The Hornets took two singles matches: Louis Chuang shut out Trevor Wright 8-0 in the four slot, Will Wagner-Yates won 8-2 against Dragan Schweim in the six.

Battling the cold wind and drizzling rain, Fulton's No. 3 doubles team of Chase Smith and Wagner-Yates defeated Wright and Schweim 10-3.

Mexico's singles victories were Brendon McKeown beating Beau Edwards 8-1 in the one spot, Brixton Goerne defeating Andrew Holmes 8-3 in the two, Boston Davolt taking an 8-4 decision against Noah Cerneka in the three and Carter Blackburn winning 8-2 versus Smith in the five.

The Bulldogs earned two doubles victories: their No. 1 duo of McKeown and Davolt, who won 10-8 against Edwards and Holmes, and their No. 2 pair of Goerne and Blackburn, who won 10-8 against Cerneka and Chuang.

Up next, Fulton competes in the Marshall Tournament Thursday at Marshall High School.
